Why K12?
Janell wanted an option where she could be more involved as well as have the extra support to keep Demonty on track academically.
Demonty is building his confidence and growing academically with online school. He loves to explore outside, read books, and make friends while playing sports.
Student Daily Schedule
6-8 HOURS / DAY
Learning Coaches typically spend between 4 to 6 hours each day with kindergarten and other elementary school students providing oversight and helping them through their lessons and assignments
Question
Why did you switch to online school?
Curriculum
The number of classes students take varies per grade level and per individual. Students in kindergarten like Demonty for example, typically take between 4–6 subjects each semester with maybe 2–4 of those requiring scheduled, live classes.
The other subjects are completed via offline assignments and skills labs in the K12 interactive online learning system where their Learning Coach can help.
In addition to core academic subjects like English, math, science, and social studies, K12-powered schools have a great selection of electives, like art and music.
Classes schedules may vary considerably based on the individual student and their needs, their state, and any special programs.
Why do you like online school?
Online school has been great for Demonty. His confidence is up, he’s engaged in his learning, and I see him wanting to learn more. I’m so proud of him. It’s really amazing to be able to not only see his day-to-day learning, but to be a part of it myself. Plus, as a Learning Coach, I like how accessible the teachers are when I have questions or need tips.
How does Demonty keep up with friends doing online school?
He gets to interact with his classmates online and I also did research initially to find local activities for Demonty to make sure he stayed social with the switch to online school. He’s made great friends playing baseball and participating in programs at the gym in town. His confidence in school and out in the world has improved so much since we started online learning.
Teacher Support and Communication
At first, Janell was a little worried about being a Learning Coach for a young student, but she quickly discovered that she had a lot of support from K12 and the teachers. The teachers are accessible and have given her great advice on how to help Demonty in areas where he can use a little extra academic support, like math. For Janell, online learning is a team effort between her and the teachers.
What do your breaks look like during a school day?
Demonty has a lot of energy so we definitely take breaks throughout the school day, and the flexibility in scheduling with online school lets us do that. We take snack breaks and lunch where he likes to help me make pizza. We love to take breaks outside too. There is a park near our house we like to walk to and enjoy the playground. I’ll often use breaks to catch up with his teachers to make sure we’re all set for whatever class or assignment is coming up next.
Hands-on Activities
One of the tips Janelle got from Demonty’s math teacher was to make math more fun. So now, they play math games together in between classes. He gets more practice on concepts he may be having a tough time with while trying to win a game against his mom. K12-powered schools provide the offline learning materials to support their curriculum too!
