Online First Grade in Utah
Explore Online School for Utah First Grade Students
Congratulations, your child is entering the wide world of first grade, a special transitional time. Students no longer need to learn primarily through playing—they're ready to take on more abstract concepts. And first grade in Utah's tuition-free* K12-powered online school is when students really put on their "thinking caps" and start moving forward academically. But not all education options serve every student well. That's why the motivating idea behind K12-powered online learning is that education can be more than a one-size-fits-all experience for your child.
Personalized Learning: More than One-Size-Fits-All Education
One of the advantages of a K12-powered education for Utah's first graders is its personalized approach. Each child's education begins with the Individualized Learning Plan (ILP), which is designed to address their strengths and weaknesses. Based on student assessments and developed by teachers, the ILP becomes an academic roadmap for the school year that meets your student right where they are and helps them move forward. For example, if your child excels at math, they may qualify to take courses at a higher grade level but stay at their normal grade level in other subjects. Personalization in the K12 program is also available through:
State-licensed teachers who tailor their instruction to students' needs
K12's mastery-based curriculum, which lets K–5 students learn at their own pace
A Parent's Important Role
If you're a parent who wants to take an active role in your child's education, K12-powered online learning for Utah's first graders provides the opportunity to be personally involved and know how your student is progressing each day. As the Learning Coach, you work with your student for about 4 to 6 hours a day helping them stay on schedule, recording daily attendance, and communicating with teachers as needed. Plus, your state-licensed teacher provides instruction in live, online classes and is available to answer your questions.
Online and Hands-On Learning
The K12 curriculum for first grade includes core subjects as well as art and music. Although first-graders are starting to excel in conceptual thinking, they still need physical education materials† — such as books and math manipulatives — to help them learn.
Many of the elementary level courses are integrated with one another to enrich student comprehension. The first grade curriculum kicks off a program that presents an overview of world history. Students learn about ancient cultures in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, India, and China. In their art courses, they learn about the art and architecture of these cultures and create hands-on artworks inspired by what they've learned, such as clay sculptures inspired by the Great Sphinx and a bust of Queen Nefertiti.
